As if

The thick hand of sadness

Sits upon my chest

Winds its way

Through the strings

Of my hair

I yearn for absolution

The knife peeling an apple

The press of a lip

Cool against the chalice

Fire on the skin

The way I stood up

Rushing out of my chair

Running down the street

Knocking on your door

As if I couldn’t call you
